Brave man suffers severe burns after trying to save dad

A man was engulfed in a blaze after running back into his burning home to try to save his father.

Li Mengshu from Kaiyang County in Guizhou, China, has been in intensive care for the past three weeks. Doctors have revealed the 36-year-old might not have survived had it not been for donations from the government and public.

The migrant worker suffered burns on 80% of his body while trying to save his dad from their burning house in their village.

Mengshu’s sister, Xuxiang, says the fire started at a family gathering for the Chinese New Year’s celebrations on 16 February.

Luckily her two brothers and mom managed to flee the house, but Mengshu charged back into the blaze as soon as he realised their dad was still trapped inside.

A few minutes later Mengshu came out covered in burns and had some devastating news for his family.

Mengshu has undergone extensive treatment at the staff hospital of the Guiyang Steel Mill.

Burn specialist Yin Hua said the migrant worker’s most severe injuries were to his face and limbs. Despite undergoing two surgeries, Mengshu’s wounds still remain open.

Yin says Mengshu, who’s still confined to his hospital bed, will require an extended stay and will continue to be given blood transfusions and skin-graft treatment.

This will cost a further R1,5 million, which the family – who’ve paid for his hospital stay by selling their livestock – can’t afford.

Fortunately, local government has subsidised some of the costs and public donations have been streaming in.
