KwaZulu-Natal has been declared a disaster area following damaging storms on Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall and gale force winds wreaked havoc on the KwaZulu-Natal East Coast. At least 14 people have died and more remain missing.

Provincial Premier Willies Mchunu says the decision was taken at a special session of the KZN Executive committee in Durban today.

Umgeni Water, meanwhile, says the heavy rain has filled dams that supply the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast with water. The Hazelmere Dam is close to overflowing.

Umgeni Water Spokesperson Shami Harichunder says, however, the rain made little difference to dams such as Midmar and Albert Falls.

sense that they sustain the economy of much of KwaZulu-Natal, and they sustain the economy of much of Durban. Durban is wholly dependant on Midmar and Albert Falls in order to ensure that households have water and that the economy is able to continue to generate production,” says Harichunder.
