Johannesburg – Former president Nelson Mandela will be remembered for his efforts in uniting the country through sport, Cricket SA (CSA) president Chris Nenzani said on Friday.

“The sporting world will remember him for his tireless efforts at uniting the various sporting codes in order to create a proud and united South African sporting front,” Nenzani said in a statement.

“As part of the greater South African family of former president Nelson Mandela, CSA expresses its sincere condolences to the family of Madiba, to the nation, and the world.

“His love for sport and his appreciation of what it could do to unify the country is legendary.”

President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela died around 8.50pm on Thursday night at his Houghton, Johannesburg, home surrounded by family. He was 95.

“Mandela played a pivotal role in the liberation of the people of our country from the injustices of the apartheid system,” Nenzani said.

“A democratic South Africa owes its success to Mandela and that great generation of leaders who were his peers.”

Nenzani added that the Proteas would remember the former statesman by playing in his honour this weekend.
