Western Cape Social Development Minister, Albert Fritz, has recounted the details of a shooting incident during an attempted robbery in Nyanga on the Cape Flats. One of the suspected robbers was killed and another seriously wounded when Fritz's bodyguards opened fire on them on Saturday morning . The robbers were demanding cellphones.
Fritz was in the area to address a youth gathering. He says while they were waiting to enter the venue, which had been changed that morning, they were approached by the two alleged robbers. He says he was on the phone enquiring about the venue change.
"Suddenly I saw a man appearing with gun on my side, and I say is this a joke, and this man says, I'm not joking, and then he pulled the trigger and this thing jammed and my protector threw the phone on the ground to distract him and he went for that, " said Fritz.
Fritz says shots were fired : "Myself and Makatisi would have been killed, it's as serious as that, but while I cry for the mother of that boy and his father but its high time the criminals learn that their time is up."
Eyewitness, Dineo Jaca says she saw three robbers : " Three guys came after they had robbed another lady at the corner, and they came to the bodyguard of Mr Fritz, robbed him of his phone and the bodyguard threw the phone at him, and as he turned the bodyguard shot him, and as that was happening Mr Fritz was rushed into a smaller car".
Police spokesperson , says a bystander was also injured during the incident. A second suspect is being treated in hospital under police guard.
"One of the suspects has been fatally wounded, one of the suspects was injured, a bystander was also injured. one suspect has been taken to a nearby hospital under police guard, we have opened a case of attempted armed robbery for investigation," Captain FC VanWyk said.
Van Wyk says the Independent Police Investigative Directorate will also be investigating the case.
