The 2017 Women’s Day celebrations will be observed on 9 August, at the Galeshewe Stadium, Kimberley.

It will be celebrated under the theme “The Year of OR Tambo: Women United in Moving South Africa Forward”.

This year marks 61 years since almost 20 000 women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings to protest against the unjust pass laws that restricted their freedom of movement and destabilised families and livelihoods.

The 2017 Women’s Month coincides with the centenary of O.R. Tambo, who was a strong advocate for gender equality.

This month, Minister in the Presidency Responsible for Women Susan Shabangu launched government’s programmes for the month of August, which are dedicated to women’s programmes.

This Women’s Month comes at a time when the country’s men and women are under the attack because of increased violence in all sectors.
